Top Ten Reissues and Compilations of 2013

10.  Yellowcard - Ocean Avenue Acoustic
So releasing an acoustic version of an album for its anniversary is kind of lazy.  Still, this was good for some nostalgia and their music has always lent itself to acoustic renditions.

09.  The Postal Service - Give Up (Deluxe 10th Anniversary Edition)
Damn, how did Ben Gibbard manage to release Give Up and Transatlanticism in the same year a decade ago?  This anniversary edition includes a remastered version of the album, all of the b-sides and two brand new tracks which justify the price of admission on their own.

08.  Nirvana - In Utero (Super Deluxe Edition)
Much like Nevermind before, In Utero got the Super Deluxe treatment in 2013 for its anniversary.  This edition includes new mixes, demos and rare live versions.

07.  Say Anything - All My Friends Are Enemies: Early Rarities
The band's signing to Equal Vision Records finally gave them the opportunity to re-issue their very first album and EP's.  They aren't all hits from a young band but you can definitely see the groundwork.

06.  Death Cab For Cutie - Transatlanticism (Demos)
I can't believe this album has already been out for a decade.  Barsuk released these demos as part of the anniversary.  It is a rare peak behind the scenes of the creation of such a classic album.

05.  The Horrible Crowes - Live At The Troubadour
The Gaslight Anthem's Brian Fallon joined forces with his guitar tech to form the more brooding Horrible Crowes.  The most brilliant part of this release are the two cover tracks - one of INXS and one of Katy Perry.  Yes, I know.  And it is AMAZING.

04.  The New Amsterdams - Outroduction
After finally calling it quits, Matt Pryor compiled all of the leftover tracks from the band's earlier albums (mostly from the Killed or Cured sessions) and put together a proper farewell to his side project.

03.  My Chemical Romance - Conventional Weapons
If My Chemical Romance had released Conventional Weapons instead of the truly terrible Danger Days, they might still be together now.  This album is everything that older fans wanted out of the band instead of the half-assed dance album they released after they scrapped this one in its entirety.

02.  Taking Back Sunday - TAYF10
By far the best show of the year (and one of the best shows ever), it featured TBS playing their perfect debut album Tell All Your Friends in its entirety.  This release features a studio quality recording of one of their live acoustic sets from that tour, plus a bonus track of "Your Own Disaster".  They get a pass on the laziness of doing an acoustic anniversary album because they did it live and breathed new life into the material.

01.  Kevin Devine - Driving Baby Lips
Kevin released this "bootleg" LP as part of a bundle for fans who supported a certain tier of his Kickstarter campaign.  It features unreleased b-sides and rarities from all across his career and is a wonderful glimpse into which songs had not seen the light of the day until now.

  1. How was the In Utero reissue? I thought I heard Albini or somebody quoted as saying something like "Yeah, when people ask when we're going to release the early vision of the album, I say 'if you've got In Utero, you've pretty much got the original version.'"

    I can't believe it's the 20th anniversary. I feel old. :(
